Waipara’s Pinot Noir specialists, Greystone, have recently partnered with Nimbility to build their China market.

This premium, family owned estate in Waipara’s Omihi hills has been selling wine successfully in China for a number of years and has decided the time is ripe to strengthen their current distribution and build greater visibility and reputation for the brand within the market, leveraging Nimbility’s expert team on the ground to do so.

“Over the past 5 years we have worked hard to secure distribution for Greystone wines in China,” says Nik Mavromatis, MD of Greystone Wines. “We are now at a stage where we need to build that distribution and the visibility of Greystone wines by supporting our import partners with clear strategy and activation. We are therefore thrilled to be working with Nimbility to take us to this next level. Their team of experts not only provides us with essential feet on the street to support our clients and implement brand building activations, they also provide us with unique knowledge, strategy insight and connections, elements that will fast track us to raising Greystone’s reputation in this complex market.”

In 2000 the Thomas Family purchased an old sheep farm on the Omihi hills because of its amazing rolling limestone hills and began work to create the Greystone vineyards. From the outset there was one goal; to realise exceptional wines from the unique limestone terroir.

By 2004 with the help of Viticulturist Nick Gill they’d planted thirteen blocks across the Omihi slopes. Dom Maxwell became their winemaker and a team was formed in the pursuit of realising the potential of this exceptional site. The north facing limestone hills slope down to clay – the perfect combination for growing wines with minerality and concentration.

In 2008 the first wine was produced and over the years Greystone has grown amid accolades and acclaim to be recognised as one of New Zealand’s best wineries. The aim is to capture the essence of this unique site and reflect this in every bottle of Greystone.

Greystone wines are 100% Certified Organic farming with biodynamic soil management. Very uniquely and unusually, they practice wild vineyard ferments – fermentations which actually take place using wild yeasts directly in the vineyards themselves. This sets them apart from other wineries doing so-called ‘wild ferments’ which usually take place in the winery. The true essence of the Greystone vineyards can captured most authentically using these methods.

This unique approach has led to wines that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere. They are truly the purest reflection of the unique characteristics of the Greystone vineyards at a single snapshot in time with each new vintage. The vivacity and authenticity of the wines has been widely recognized by high scores and critical acclaim across the globe.

Experts in Pinot Noir, they also produce a cool climate Syrah, premium Chardonnay and vibrant aromatic varieties – Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gerwürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc.
